GREECE ATTICA ATHENS HOROLOGION OF ANDRONICOS

Quite conspicious at the Eastern end of the Roman agora is the octagonal "Horologion of Andronicos" (or: "Tower of the Winds").

This 12.10 m high tower was constructed in the first century BC by the Greek astronomer Andronicos Kyrrhestes and shows at the top of each side the respective wind, symbolized by a male figure floating in the air. Originally there were sundials on the outside and an elaborate water-clock in the inside to show the exact time. Probably it even contained a planetarium.
